Abstract

This chapter discusses molecular biology, which deals with genetic continuity and evolution of living organism. Genetics, physics and biochemistry are the sciences which make up molecular biology. Nucleoproteins are conjugated proteins. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid) are nucleic acids. Purines and pyrimidines are nitrogenous bases present in nucleic acids. Adenine and guanine are purines. Cytosine, thymine and uracil are pyrimidines. Adenosine diphosphate and adenosine triphosphate serves as a source of high energy phosphate. Hydrogen bonding of nitrogenous bases causes DNA to form a double helix and two strands are complimentary and anti-parallel. Nitrogenous bases linked to ribose or deoxyribose through N-glycosidic linkage are nucleosides. Some nucleosides are adenosine, guanosine, uridine, cytidine and thymidine. S-adenosyl methionine is a biologically important nucleoside containing adenine. Molecular biology is a rapidly expanding area of biochemistry and the following experiments are only a small selection from this field of study.
