Abstract

Vasculitis is defined as inflammatory diseases of the blood vessels. Majority of them are immunologically mediated. A few like atheroscelerosis, thrombotic obliterans are nonimmunological. The blood vessels involved can be as large as the aorta or as small as the capillaries and venules. The kidney is a vascular organ and consequently is involved in disorders affecting the vascular system. Renal involvement includes inflammation and necrosis of blood vessels, glomeruli and the interstitial tissue. These processes contribute to renal malfunction, morbidity and mortality since these disorders have multi organ involvement. The symptoms include that of all organ systems and renal manifestation forms a part of it and is likely to be delayed or remain subclinical. Most of them present as acute glomerulonephritis, severe hypertension or persistent proteinuria and hematuria.
