Abstract

Renal failure, acute and chronic, is increasingly seen in pediatric population and is being commonly treated in various pediatric centers in India. Pediatricians and pediatric nephrologists play a major role in the management of these children thereby reducing the morbidity and mortality resulting from renal failure. Management includes many aspects and the common aspect is one that is concerned with fluid therapy. Management of fluid and sodium is an important and integral part of treatment of both acute and chronic renal failure. Progressive increase in blood urea and serum creatinine is the cardinal feature of renal failure with derangements of body fluid volume and composition. A major goal of fluid therapy in ARF is achieving and maintaining normal effective circulating blood volume.
