Critical Care Update 2003

by Vineet Nayyar

The “Update” series aims at providing the busy postgraduate and junior doctors with evidence based recommendations on the management of critically ill patients. A secondary but an equally important goal is to analyse current information as it becomes available and provides a comprehensive summary of new and evolving issues relevant to the practice of ICU Medicine. An additional objective is to cover topics related to the organization of ICU services that impact upon the delivery of health care. The first section of the “Update” carries a set of four articles every year that creates a theme for that year’s publications. The theme for this year is on quality assurance in the ICU. The science of systems is covered in the first chapter. The area of psychological sciences has been covered in the chapter on error in medicine. Finally, the science of prediction is covered in the chapter on outcomes
