Abstract

The pelvis is made up three bones. The two innominate bones and the sacrum. The pelvic brim is formed by the pubic crest, pectineal line of the pubis, arcuate line of the ilium, the alae of the sacrum and the promontory of the sacrum. Pyriformis muscle is classed as muscle of the lower limb. The obturator foramen is covered with a membrane called the obturator membrane. The ureters are pair of tubes connecting the bladder and the kidneys. The pelvic floor is made up of gutter shaped sheet of muscles. Levator ani consists of two main parts, iliococcygeus and pubococcygeus. Coccygeus arises from the tip of the ischial spine. The thoracic aorta enters the abdomen between the crura of the diaphragm at the level of the 12th thoracic vertebra. The ovarian arteries arise from the anterior aspect of the aorta just below the origin of the renal arteries. The inferior mesenteric artery is the artery of the hindgut. The common iliac arteries arise at the level of 4th lumbar vertebra from the bifurcation of the aorta. The external iliac artery continues in the line of the common iliac artery along the pelvic brim over the psoas muscle and enters into the lower limb beneath the inguinal ligament. The internal iliac artery and its branches mostly supply the pelvic organs and the walls. Afferent fibers of pelvic splanchic nerve carries sensation of distention and pain from the bladder, lower cervix, lower colon and rectum. The pelvic organs are supplied by the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic components are derived from the superior hypogastric plexus via the hypogastric nerve and from the sacral sympathetic ganglion. The lymph nodes in the pelvis are arranged along the major blood vessels.
