Abstract

This chapter discusses functional assessment of hearing and vestibular function tests, where the tests of hearing should be preferably done in a sound-proof room. Tests of hearing is important to measure the degree, type of hearing loss, site of hearing loss and its impact on speech development and rehabilitation. Tuning fork tests are qualitative tests as these indicate the type of hearing loss. Sound through bone conduction is transmitted by vibration of skull bones or through one’s own voice or sound in the atmosphere. Pure tone audiometry is a reliable method of testing the hearing acuity and gives information about the quantity and quality of hearing loss. Recruitment is an abnormally rapid increase in loudness with increasing sound intensity. Tympanogram is the graphic representation of compliance and impedance of tympano-ossicular system with air pressure changes. Directional preponderance is seen in both peripheral and central lesions. Frenzel’s glasses are used to highlight the nystagmus.
