Abstract

Understanding the principles, which underlie general surgical problems and operative surgery, will significantly help obstetricians and gynecologists in their own field of work. The overlap of general surgery in the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology is appreciated by all clinicians. Acute abdominal pain in pregnancy, symptomatic diseases of the breast and urinary or fecal incontinence often present first to the gynecologist. These topics have been dealt with elsewhere in this textbook. The present chapter shall focus on other areas where knowledge and understanding of general surgical principles is essential to the good practice of obstetrics and gynecology.
