Abstract

The pathologic processes in infants and young children differ significantly from that of the adolescent or adult female. The gynecologic problems encountered in the pediatric population are unique to this age group and involve physician skills differing from those utilized with an adult population. It is important to understand the normal anatomy and physiology of the reproductive tract and genitalia in the prepubertal female in order to understand, evaluate, and manage the common problems seen in this age group. An orderly approach to the history and physical examination aids in making a correct diagnosis. One should remember that it is important to gain the confidence of the child and make the process as pain-free as possible. Providing clear explanations of the problem assists in lowering the parents’ anxiety and reassuring them that there are rarely any long-term consequences of these common problems.
