Abstract

Culture media are classified as liquid, semisolid, and solid. Simple media contain minimum required nutrients necessary to support microorganisms, which are not fastidious. They consist of mainly some proteins, carbohydrates, few mineral salts and water. Enrichment media are liquid selective media mostly used to isolate pathogenic bacteria from diarrheal stools or from food materials, which are suspected for contamination as in cases like food poisoning. These types of media suppress the growth of normal flora, so that the pathogenic bacteria remain viable even though their number is low, e. g. selinite F broth, tetra thionate broth, Leedlam’s medium. Transport media contain essential salts and low concert ratio of nutrients so that bacteria are not multiplied before they are examined in the laboratory. Transport media are mainly used to collect the specimens with sterile swabs and bacteria present in such swabs are maintained by putting the swab in the transport medium before they are dispatched.
