This chapter aims to discuss the respiratory emergencies. It covers six respiratory emergencies i.e. acute asthma, community acquired pneumonia, aspiration pneumonia, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumothorax, tension pneumothorax, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and percutaneous needle stick injury. Only minorities of asthma attacks are provoked by bacterial infection and antibiotics are not routinely prescribed. Antibiotics are prescribed if there is focal shadow on CXR indicating pneumonia, fever or purulent sputum. A detailed discussion on the symptoms, signs, investigations, differential diagnosis and treatment options for all the respiratory emergencies has been presented in this chapter.
