Abstract

Diseases caused by physical agents are discussed in this chapter. Friction causes blisters when the friction is severe, and corns and callosities when the friction is repetitive. Heat causes burns when acute and erythema ab-igne when it is chronic. Similarly, cold can cause frost bite in normal individuals, and chilblains in predisposed individuals. Sunlight however can cause sunburn, chronic solar dermatitis, or photosensitivity depending upon the intensity of the exposure and the predisposing factor(s). The description includes measures necessary to ameliorate the condition and those required to prevent a recurrence.
