Abstract

Deals with dermatophytic infections of the skin caused by the 3 genera of dermatophytes namely Microsporum, Trichophyton and Epidermophyton. The clinical diseases have been classified into tricho-dermatophytosis (tinea capitis and tinea barbae) which are primarily infections of the hair; glabrous dermatophytosis (tinea corporis) affecting the non-hairy skin, intertriginous dermatophytosis (tinea cruris, tinea axillaris and tinea interdigitale) primarily affecting the skin folds; palmoplantar dermatophytosis (tinea magnum and tinea pedis) affecting the palms and the soles, and ungual dermatophytosis (tinea unguium) affecting the nails. The description includes the methods of confirming the cause and identifying the causative dermatophyte and treatment.
