Abstract

Trachoma remains the leading cause of preventable corneal blindness in developing countries. Trachomatous keratopathy may present as a diffuse corneal opacity or haze, which is the end stage of peripheral and central corneal infiltrates. It may also present as trachomatous keratopathy or as Salzmann’s nodular keratopathy. The conventional treatment of these corneal opacities is penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) which has a guarded prognosis because of the extensive corneal neovascularization and adnexal and ocular surface problems. Lamellar keratoplasty (LKP) is being increasingly used in these cases since the pathology is confined to the anterior corneal layers. Trachoma is one of the leading indications for LKP and was responsible for as many as 14 percent of the lamellar grafts done in one study.
