Abstract

Sickle Cell Anaemia is a hereditary disorder commonly seen in the Middle East (Saudi Arabia) Mediterranean region and Indian subcontinent. In the countries where it is prevalent mandatory pre marital screening for sickle cell is carried out on the couples getting married. There are different procedures for screening of Hamemoglobin S starting from a simple and cost effective procedure known as “Solubility Test” based on the principle that haemoglobin S is less soluble compared to normal haemoglobin A, to more sophisticated tests of Haemoglobin Electrophoresis and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). For population and initial studies of Haemoglobin S the “Solubility Test” is vey convenient and cost effective. Many commercially produced kits for Solubility Test are available in the market. The procedure described here is based on Ortho’s kit.
