Obstetric anaesthesia/analgesia requires some basic understanding unique to the parturient such as physiological changes during pregnancy and labour, the effects of drugs including anaesthetics including anaesthetics in the foetus and neonate, the risks and benefits of various methods of anaesthesia and the influence of obstetric complications on the anaesthetic management. These patients are not always in optimal condition at the time of anaesthesia and are always at risk of aspiration of gastric contents. Adequate precautionary measures should be taken. Careful monitoring of maternal and foetal status is essential during anaesthesia. In this chapter various techniques of optimal anaesthesia/analgesia for labour, vaginal delivery and caesarean section are dealt. Some other topics such as abnormal presentation, multiple births, pregnancy induced hypertension, haemorrhage in the parturient, anaesthesia for nonobstetric surgery during pregnancy etc. are also discussed.
