Abstract

Elderly patients are always at great risk of perianaesthetic complications mostly due to age related concomitant diseases and a generalized decline in different organ functions. These patients should be properly evaluated and treated whenever necessary before anaesthesia. Psychological, physiological and pharmacological aspects should also be considered. Control of co-existing diseases should be attempted. Skillful anaesthetic management, adequate monitoring and care during perioperative period may reduce the incidence of mortality and morbidity of surgery in elderly patients.
