Surgery/injury can cause significant physiologic changes in almost all organ systems. Fear, anxiety, pain, haemorrhage, hypovolaemia, hypoxia, hypercarbia, acidosis, tissue injury etc. can also influence the stress response. The appropriate physiologic response is to maintain homeostasis, which is to maintain perfusion and function of vital organs. But with prolonged exposure it can cause serious adverse effects.
