Preanaesthetic assessment of the patient’s surgical and medical health is essential to optimize the medical condition and various body functions, to minimize the risk of perioperative morbidity and mortality. History of coexisting disease, proper physical examination and relevant laboratory investigations are needed. Expert opinion may sometimes be beneficial. Adequate information regarding anaesthesia and proper consent are mandatory.
