Abstract

Either endoscopic sinus surgery or for that matter any surgery cannot be learned from the books or in a classroom. Following experience with thousands of patient and diligent follow up of these over a long period of time, the authors have laid down simple, sensible and practical “rules of thumb” for the novice surgeon who is going to embark upon endoscopic sinus surgery. The chapter is profusely complemented by cadaver dissection both hard and soft parts, clinical examination by nasal endoscopy and CT imaging of various diseases pertaining to paranasal sinus anatomy. Special emphasis made to detailed anatomy and its normal variations during nasal endoscopy examination so that the young surgeon is not lured into a false diagnosis and there by leading him/her to operate that patient unnecessarily and ending up in disappointment for the surgeon but especially for the patient. There are abundant operative, post operative, and CT scan follow up photographs to make important points during various procedures during operation. The vital steps during operation on important structures is made step by step which is usually not mentioned in most textbooks on the subject. Over the years the authors have found through their courses and workshops these tips and quips extremely useful hence these are included in this chapter.
