Abstract

Nasal mucosa is a very vascular structure deriving its blood supply from sphenopalatine and ethmoid arteries. The internal carotid artery is in close relation to the sphenoid sinus and the surgeon has to be extremely careful and diligent when tackling sphenoid sinus pathology during operation. This chapter emphasises in great detail how to prevent bleeding during operation by means of adequate pre operative workup and meticulous atraumatic technique that is must when one is operating on a vascular structure like nose and sinuses. The anatomical locations of the anterior and posterior ethmoid arteries are well illustrated by means of cadaver dissection, operative photographs and on |HD CT scans. The importance of preoperative preparation of the patient i.e., in cases of nasal polyposis administration of systemic steroids, and thorough preparation of the nose prior to operation is mandatory. If there is an excessive bleeding during the operation then, various methods to control is discussed.
