Abstract

Author’s personal view points on the need for colostomy in bowel injuries and techniques of avoiding bowel injury at vaginal hysterectomy are elaborated first. Normal anatomy of small intestines and colon is given. Methods of evaluating the gastrointestinal tract like Plain radiography, Ultrasonography Barium meal CT scan, and endoscopy are described. Indications for bowel preparation and methods of bowel preparation before surgeries are enumerated. Repair of injuries to small bowel, and rectal injuries are described. Diagnosis and management of enterocutaneous fistulae and rectovaginal fistulae are described. Aetiology, diagnosis and management of Peritonitis and small bowel obstruction are described. Post operative care after bowel surgery including guidelines on management of nasogastric tube, and abdominal drains is described in detail.
