Abstract

Bleeding is a potential complication of almost every surgical procedure; when appropriately anticipated, it can be managed with relative ease. This chapter reviews aspects of the pathophysiology of bleeding that are important for the surgeon. Preoperative detection of haemostatic defects is the key to minimizing potential bleeding complications. Timely recognition and management of hemorrhage is fundamental to good surgical care.
