Abstract

Stem cell transplants, whether related or unrelated, require precise human leukocyte antigen matching between donor and patient. National bone marrow registry (NBMR) has over 5.5 million volunteer donors of marrow and peripheral blood stem cells and 15 cord blood banks containing more than 36.000 units of umbilical cord blood. This chapter describes the activity of NBMR and provides exhaustive list of diseases treatable by stem cell transplantation. NMDP has facilitated nearly 20,000 transplants. This is the largest and most diverse registry in the world of potential stem cell donors.
