by A Parthasarathy, Swati Y Bhave, MKC Nair, PSN Menon, Donald E Greydanus

Adolescent health is especially important for our country. India has 225 million adolescents, which constitutes 22% of our total population. Unlike the West, adolescent medicine is not an established specialty in India. It is neither a recognized subject in the undergraduate medical curriculum nor is there any existing formal postgraduate degree which is recognized by the Medical Council of India. This pioneering effort aims at filling the lacuna of not having a textbook dedicated to Indian adolescent medicine. The contributors to this book are national and international professionals from the fields of Pediatrics, Mental Health, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Public Health and some super-specialties. The variety of topics covered here makes this book immensely useful to a large cross section of health and community workers. Postgraduate medical students from all specialties will also find it a useful reference while dealing with their adolescent patients. This book is nicely organized in 27 sections in 153 topics which cover every major aspect of adolescent health in India. This book covers adolescent growth, development, puberty, common medical and surgical problems and immunization; current medico-legal issues and practices, consent and confidentiality; mental health issues including anxiety, depression, suicide prevention, psychiatry disorders, PTSS and substance abuse; promotion of positive mental health with positive discipline, parenting, yoga, meditation, stress management and sports participation; reproductive and sexual health with special focus on teenage pregnancy and HIV-AIDS; sexual abuse and medico-legal examination of rape victims; psychosocial issues like prevention of: risk taking behaviors, violence and aggression; impact of the internet and media on childhood development and behaviors.
