Abstract

Despite the existence of fairly developed modern medicine world over, a large section of the human population still depends on medicinal plants for its primary health care needs. The north-eastern region of India is a treasure house of a large number of plant species due to unique environmental conditions prevailing in this region. Nearly 50 percent of the total flora of India is found in this region. This rich biodiversity has been utilized by tribals over the last several years. At RRL, Jorhat a number of plants have been chemically examined over the last twenty five years, and more than 100 new molecules of different structural type isolated and screened for anticancer and anti-AIDS potential. The salient findings from a program of chemical investigation of folklore medicinal plants of north-eastern region of India have been discussed in this chapter.
