Abstract

Use of plants as a source of medicine is an important component of the health care system. Plumbagin (5-hydroxy-2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone) has been widely used as phytomedicine. Plumbagin is derived from members of the family Plumbaginaceae, Droseraceae, Drosophyllaceae, Ebenaceae, Ancistrocladaceae, Dioncophyllaceae, Nepenthaceae, Polygonaceae, and is being widely used by the pharmaceutical industries. Plumbagin was found to exhibit a variety of interesting pharmacological activities in lower concentrations. Because of the presence of plumbagin, many species of Drosera species are widely used in herbal industries to prepare commercial products like “Herba Droserae and Herba Drosera rotundifoliae”.
