Abstract

A wound is a disruption of normal anatomy, structure and function of skin or a wound is a physical trauma where the skin is torn, cut or punctured. Wound healing comprises of complex dynamic process that results in the restoration of continuity of skin and function. Similarly, an ideally healed wound is one that has been regained its anatomic function and so it should be easily recut. The initial phase of wound healing is hemostasis, which is activated by clotting cascade, which entraps erythrocytes and platelets like cells of blood to destruct its flow. This fibrin clot initially forms a wound matrix. The modern science of wound healing is rapidly getting advanced due to result of new therapeutic approaches like stem cells therapy, growth factors, gene therapy, and skin substituents. Very few studies have been carried out on wound healing activity using herbal drugs on animal models. Most of the drugs used to cure wounds are antibacterial agents and are available in the form of topical ointments or creams. Thus, there is an immense opportunity to explore the use of herbal drugs for wound healing. A thorough literature survey revealed that many plants have been screened for their wound healing property. The present paper deals with the wound healing properties of many plants, specially the useful part and mode of application.
