Abstract

Parkinson’s disease involves neuronal cell death in the selective regions of brain due to defects in energy metabolism, oxidative stress and traumatic brain injury leading to neuro degeneration. Symptomatic treatment does not alter the course of the disease, therefore has necessitated exploring the alternative therapies. The Indian medicinal system has a long history of use of herbal remedies and has documented data on mechanism of action, specific action, short-term and long-term toxic effects, drug-drug and drug-diet. Current therapies and perspective of herbal remedies for treatment of Parkinson’s disease has been discussed.
