The surgical problems faced by diabetics may be one of general or specific to diabetics. The cholecystitis, pyelonephritis, diabetic foot ulcers and gangrene, Fournier’s gangrene, diabetic carbuncle, Mucormycosis of the face and emphysema of the paranasal sinuses are peculiar to diabetes related to the severity of presentation. Surgical problem like acute pancreatitis as a cause or effect, mimicking surgical problem in DKA are some of the highlights. Pre, per and post operative care is dealt in detail. Anaesthetist’s role in diabetes surgery is highlighted.
