Surface Replacement of the Hip

by SKS Marya, RK Bawari

This book thoroughly examines the evolution of hip resurfacing arthroplasty providing a useful portrait of part failures and lessons to be learnt. Effectively covers all aspects of perioperative care and surgical technique, and should serve as a useful compendium for surgeons at all level engaged in hip resurfacing. This book is a fine contribution to the surgeon’s education as the hip resurfacing operation is technically more demanding than conventional hip arthroplasty and the vast majority of early failures of lip recur facing are caused by poor patient reflection and technical errors. The salient features of surface replacement arthroplasty include the following: (i) Aim of the surgery is to change the defective lining of the articulating surfaces of the hip joint. (ii) The head and neck bone stock is essentially preserved. (iii) The patient can pursue near normal range of activities including sports, squatting and sitting cross-legged. (iv) It is a metal on metal prosthesis with extremely low wear rate and longer life of the implant. (v) It allows and encourages mineralization of the juxta-articular bones. (v) Revision is easier and far less destructive. It is important to realize that the success of implantation is not just about the bearing surfaces.
