The first documented endoscopy, which was a cystoscopy, was performed by Bozzini in 1807. It was not until 1970 that hysteroscopy began to develop. The design of the optical system by Hopkins entailed a significant technological change, with the introduction of thinner, brighter lenses with excellent image clarity. Development of hysteroscopy and all other endoscopic techniques began at this time.
