Abstract

This chapter discusses various aspects of allergy, immunodeficiency, and rheumatological disorders in children, in detail. Allergies can lead to diseases such as and allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis. In such cases, it is recommended to avoid the food items known to be allergenic in children resistant to treatment. Basic Immunology and immunological disorders in children include severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), humoral immunodeficiency, cellular immunity defects, and humoral immunity defects. Children with severe combined immunodeficiency and Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome need bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in early infancy for survival. Rheumatological disorders in children include juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome (APLA syndrome). Juvenile dermatomyositis can be treated with corticosteroids given initially as intravenous pulses for 3 to 5 days followed by oral prednisolone which is gradually tapered over a period of approximately 2 years.
