Abstract

This chapter discusses various aspects of immunization and infectious diseases in detail. The principles and practice of immunization, immunization schedules, the cold chain of vaccines, and various disease survelliance, is discussed. General rules of immunization include keeping all vaccines at +2 degC to +8 deg C, two viral vaccines like MMR, varicella can be given together, DTwP can be used as solvent to dissolve the pellets of Hib vaccine, and baby must be two months old, and weigh two kg at the time of immunization. From the manufacturing unit to the site of vaccine administration, stringent measures should be followed as per recommendations to avoid breaks in cold chain. Integrated disease surveillance Program (IDSP) is expected to provide essential data to monitor progress of ongoing disease control programs and will be able to detect early warning signals of impending outbreaks and help initiate an effective response in a timely manner. Media and NGOs also can play an important role in surveillance through active participation in rumor registry of diseases in children.
