Abstract

Although fungal infections constitute the largest group of opportunistic infections, followed by others such as bacterial, viral and parasitic. Majority of immunocompromised patients experience opportunistic infection by a single pathogen. However, at times some of these patients may have mixed infection with more than one pathogen(s) either in the same tissue or in different tissues and organs. This chapter describes 16 cases of mixed opportunistic infections experienced by the authors in immunocompromised patients. The cases include a combination of bacterial and fungal, viral and fungal and fungal and parasitic infections, however in few cases infections by more than one viral pathogens or by multiple fungi or by different parasites were encountered. Illustrative photomicrographs of these cases under diverse clinical settings along with descriptive legends of each case including their clinical presentation, radiological findings and laboratory workup, IHC findings and their interpretations and the findings of slide culture for fungus have been highlighted.
