This chapter gives normal values for resting skeletal muscle blood flow. It also describes circulatory adjustments to exercise as local and systemic changes. The local mechanisms are shown in the form of a chart. This chapter also enumerates the physiological changes occurring during isometric and isotonic exercise. It highlights the importance of temperature regulation and stresses on the need to increase cardiac output and oxygen consumption in proportion to the degree of exercise, occasionally beyond the limits of aerobic pathways. Thus with severe exercise, the energy stores are replenished through anaerobic pathways and Oxygen debt that is incurred is paid off post exercise. This chapter also outlines the beneficial effects of training on exercise.
