Abstract

Aminoglycosides are antibiotics with amino sugars in glycosidic linkages. They act by inhibiting protein synthesis and are bactericidal. They are all given parenterally; their penetration into CSF is poor. All of them produce variable degrees of OTO and nephrotoxicity. They are effective in gram negative bacterial infections. Neomycin is used topically in skin infections.
