Worm infestations are more common in people with poor hygiene. Anthelmintics are deworming agents. Mebendazole is a broad spectrum anthelmintic effective against round worm, hook worm, pin worm and strongyloides infestations. Albendazole is similar to mebendazole but has several advantages over it. It is the drug of choice in round worm, hook worm, pin worm, trichuriasis, neurocysticercosis, and in hydatid disease. Pyrantel pamoate is used in the treatment of round worm, hook worm and pin worm infestations. Niclosamide is effective against most tape worms, is also an alternative drug in intestinal fluke infestation. Praziquantel has good activity against schistosomes of all species, most other trematodes and cestodes including cysticercosis. Diethylcarbamazine is the drug of choice in filariasis. Microfilariae rapidly disappear from the blood except those present in hydrocele and nodules. Ivermectin is effective against many nematodes, arthropodes and filariae that infect animals and human beings.
