Abstract

Oestrogens are produced by the ovaries, placenta and in small amounts by the adrenals and testes. Oestrogens are essential for the normal maturation of the female reproductive tract, development of secondary sexual characters and other functions in the female. It is used for replacement therapy in deficiency states, as oral contraceptive, in post menopausal osteoporosis and carcinoma prostate. SERMs have tissue selective estrogenic activity. Tamoxifen is used in breast cancer. Raloxifene acts as an estrogen receptor agonist in the bone. Clomiphene citrate is used in infertility due to ovarian disorders and in in vitro fertilization. Progesterone is the natural progestin synthesized in the ovary and placenta. It is important in the maintenance of pregnancy and for ovulation. Antiprogestin mifepristone is used for termination of pregnancy and as a post coital contraceptive. Combination of estrogen and progesterone are used as hormonal contraceptives.
