Abstract

Pancreatic carcinoma is a major cause of cancer death with 5-year survival rate being 1 to 4% after diagnosis. It is the 14th most common cancer worldwide with around 216,000 new cases per year. Developed countries have highest incidence rates. It primarily affects adults in the age group of 65 to 80 years. The incidence and mortality rates are almost the same typifying its sinister prognosis. Even after surgical resection of a localized pancreatic carcinoma with or without adjuvant chemotherapy, the 5-year survival rates remain poor, in the range of 20 to 30%. Pancreatic cancer involving the body and tail generally presents late, either as locally advanced or metastatic disease because they do not cause obstructive jaundice, in contrast to pancreatic head carcinoma which present relatively early due to obstruction of biliary tree clinically apparent as jaundice and pruritus.
