Abstract

Rectal cancer is a peculiar malignancy as extirpation of this cancer may lead to loss of rectal sphincter especially for a low lying lesion, and patient is condemned to a permanent colostomy making him a social outcast. Thus all efforts in carcinoma rectum are directed towards saving the rectal sphincter where possible. This has been further made possible by availability of intraluminal or circular staplers which help preserve the sphincter even in lesions as low as 6-7 cms from the anal verge permitting a ultra ‘low anterior resection’.
