Prostate cancer is a common malignancy in elderly men, and a leading cause of cancer death. The disease exists in two forms. One is the indolent variety, referred to as the latent or histologic prostate cancer, which remains silent throughout life and is only discovered incidentally, they die with the disease rather than due to the disease. The other is the clinically aggressive variety that can be detected because of symptomatology or an abnormal digital rectal exam or after investigation of an elevated prostate-specific antigen, and eventually progresses inexorably to osseous metastases and death. Prostate cancer is mainly a disease of the elderly, and only 15% of cases occur under the age of 65 yrs, with a peak incidence seen around the age of 85 years. Prostate cancer accounts for 200,000 deaths worldwide annually.
