Abstract

Oncology patients require long term venous access for administration of chemotherapy drugs, parenteral nutrition, blood and blood products and withdrawal of blood samples for investigations. Repeated peripheral venipunctures and also administration of toxic chemotherapy, hypertonic parenteral alimentation results in vein deterioration. It is a painful experience for a patient and the oncology nurse to secure a venous line in such patients. It is desirable to have a long-term venous access in patients undergoing aggressive chemotherapy, bone narrow transplantation and protracted intravenous therapy.
