Abstract

In postnatal period functional closure of ductus arteriosus starts by 10-15 hours and complete anatomical closure occur subsequently. Most of the premature infants have PDA even up to three months. PDA is essential in some patients having complex heart disease for their survival (duct dependant lesions. Small PDA remains asymptomatic, it is suspected when a continuous murmur is heard over left infraclavicular area. Large PDA is diagnosed by high volume pulse, LV apex and continuous murmur with eddies sounds. ECG shows LA and LV enlargement with pulmonary plethora on X-ray. Echocardiogram with Doppler detects the continuous flow from aorta to pulmonary artery. It also demonstrates the size of the duct, PA pressure and LV function. Infective endarteritis is a potential life threatening complication at any age irrespective of size of the duct. Early nonsurgical (device/coil closure) and surgical closure for all types of PDA is advised.
