Abstract

This chapter discusses the many lesions caused to cornea (and eye) by various viruses (except herpes which is discussed in the next chapter). Adenovirus (13 serotypes) causes mostly outer eye lesions. There is no specific treatment for this. Herpes zoster is an important virus usually affecting the adults. It lies dormant till reactivated. It can cause acute or chronic lesions. The lesions are typical and can result in complications, some of them being serious ones. Varicella virus can cause disabling corneal lesions. Measles virus usually does not give rise to serious problems. But mumps virus may not be so benign. The other viruses discussed are variola, vaccinia, rubella and mollluscum. HIV ocular lesions are discussed in detail grouping according to the stages. The treatment for these viral diseases is outlined at the end of this chapter. Most of the lesions are illustrated with photos.
