Indications of open cholecystectomy are presence of contra-indications to laparoscopic cholecystectomy, failed laparoscopic cholecystectomy for symptomatic gall stones and carcinoma of gall bladder. Incision may be Kocher’s subcostal or right transverse. The gall bladder is removed usually by neck first method, but fundus first method may be indicated when there is dense adhesion in Calot’s triangle… Preferably, but not always, cystic artery is ligated first. A drain is put in pouch of Morrison.
