Splenectomy may be indicated for splenic trauma, iatrogenic injuries, delayed rupture of spleen, spontaneous rupture of pathological spleen, primary hypersplenism, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, hemolytic anemia, and primary tumors of spleen. The operative procedure may be emergency Splenectomy or elective Splenectomy. Surgical alternatives to splenectomy are splenorrhaphy, partial splenectomy, and splenic wrapping.
