Abstract

Long term oxygen therapy (LTOT) is now an established treatment in a variety of respiratory disorders. The indications of domiciliary LTOT have expanded from patients with COPD and chronic respiratory insufficiency to include almost any chronic respiratory disease characterized by hypoxemia. In fact domiciliary oxygen is also used in patients who do not demonstrate hypoxemia during the awake, restful state but demonstrate hypoxemia during sleep or exercise. More important than the underlying disease is the physiological status which necessitates LTOT. This chapter provides an evidence-based comprehensive discussion on the indications and benefits of LTOT in various pulmonary disorders.
