Abstract

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the administration of oxygen at a pressure greater than that at sea-level. There occurs an increased oxygen carrying capacity of blood due to the increased oxygen content dissolved in plasma and a higher PaO2. The increased oxygen delivery to the tissues may promote healing, phagocytosis and antibiotic action. The most definite indications include the decompression sickness, air embolism, carbon monoxide poisoning and gas-gangrene. It is also used as an adjunct to treatment of cancers and various miscellaneous conditions including the sepsis, non-healing wounds, venous ulcers, crush injuries and others. Complications of oxygen toxicity and barotraumas are more common with hyperbaric therapy. Various different types of chambers are available for hyperbaric therapy.
