Abstract

The air we breathe is a mixture of gases of which nitrogen and oxygen form the main bulk. The physical properties of gases influence the mechanics of breathing in both the healthy and the disease state. They also determine the therapeutic strategies especially with reference to the oxygen and other aerosol therapies as well as the mechanical ventilation. The chapter summarizes and clearly defines the state of matter, physical properties of gases, the gas-laws and the principles governing the gases and their flows.
