Abstract

Bilirubin is a product of heme catabolism, made water soluble by conjugation in liver and secreted into bile forming urobilinogens in intestine. Serum bilirubin estimation methods are based on Van den Bergh reaction in which bilirubin forms azobilirubin on treating with diazotized sulphanilic acid. Hyperbilirubinemia is manifested as jaundice. Serum bilirubin estimation is a test assessing the excretory function of liver and useful in differential diagnosis of jaundice.
